Operator Licence – Everything You Need to Know
Do You Need a Goods Vehicle Operator’s Licence?
If your business operates goods vehicles over a certain weight, you must have an operator’s licence. This applies to vehicles used for transporting goods with:
✔ A gross plated weight (maximum allowable weight) over 3,500 kg
✔ An unladen weight (when empty) over 1,525 kg, if no plated weight applies
There are three types of licences, depending on your business operations. You must also ensure that all drivers hold the correct licences and training, and that your vehicles are taxed, safe, and well-maintained.
???? Some vehicles may be exempt – check the full list of exemptions.
Do You Need a Licence for Motor Vehicles & Trailers?
An operator’s licence is required for motor vehicles and trailers if:
✅ The combined gross plated weight exceeds 3,500 kg
✅ The total unladen weight of the vehicle and trailer is over 1,525 kg
However, you may not need a licence if your trailer’s unladen weight is under 1,020 kg and you only carry your own goods.
Carrying Goods for Hire or Reward?
If you transport goods for hire or reward (e.g., working as a courier or freight transport service), you’ll need a standard operator’s licence if your vehicle and trailer exceed the weight limits mentioned above.
